Cheong Soo Pieng

Born in China in 1917, Cheong Soo Pieng was educated at the Amoy Fine Art Academy until 1935 and the Sin Hwa Art Academy of Shanghai. His first show in Singapore was in 1956, sponsored by the Singapore Art Society.

Known as a painter and batik artist, not a sculptor, Cheong Soo Pieng created three-dimensional murals, and according to the catalog of the Singapore Art Society's first exhibition of sculpture, in 1967, had the following mural commissions in public buildings in Singapore:

Cathay Organisation

Singapore Telephone Board

Shell Company, Singapore

Tourist Promotion Board, Singapore

Tanglin Branch of the Bank of America

St Peter's Church, Singapore
