The text, or lakon, of the gambuh plays is usually taken from the long cycle of tales that revolve around the heroic mythical prince Panji. However it is not the actual story which is important in gambuh, but the long, very formal entrances of the characters. Each of these have elaborately specific modes of dress and make-up, voice, music and choreography. It is these entrances that take up most of the long performance, and it is the artistry of their execution that is the real drama of gambuh.
