the painted cardboard shanties of Shinjuku Station
William Gibson wrote about these, and about the homeless ex-salaryman who lived in one, painting the scuffs of his shoes in pen ink...maintaining appearances. Now come to the website that documents all of this, a 1990s phenomenon. In Japanese though! but some fine pix, as artists helped to paint (and therefore legitimize) the highly temporary structures.
