Tuesday, October 24, 2006 rediscovering a Philippines sculptor Now I haven't seen the work, not properly, though I do remember casting my eye over the carvings at the Manila Cathedral, but I thought it important to record this article on turn of the 20th century Filipino sculptor Isabelo Tampinco y Lakandola. The article is clearly building him into myth - beginning by comparing him to ilustrado painter Juan Luna, and mentioning in the second sentence that Jose Rizal praised him (also mentioning - and this was news to me - that Jose Rizal was a talented sculptor himself - see here for some works). The article is prepublication publicity for a new book, in which Tampinco "emerges amid the shambles of our national memory". The book is by Professor Santiago Pillar, published by the National Museum, and designed by Sid Hildawa Gomez. To be published in February 2007 |
