the "streets are perfumed with the fragrance of freshly cut sawdust"
This from a note in the China Post on the Sanyi Woodcarving Festival, Aug 19 to 27 in Sanyi, Miaoli County, Taiwan. The festival is in its 14th year, and has an African focus this year, with works from 14 African countries. Woodcarving has somehow come to be a marker of Taiwaneseness in Taiwanese art, and Taiwan's most well-known creator of public sculpture, Ju Ming, started as a wood-carver, and the carving aesthetic is still key to his work.
