Asian Public Art News
Art and similar interventions in public space. Coverage moves outwards from Singapore through Asia to the rest of the world. Like nothing else, the idea of "public art" exposes the contradiction inherent in our ideas of "the public" and of "art".

  "Monument Sends Message of Peace..."

030206 News06
Though the firmness of the grip the "golden" police officer keeps on the shoulders of his "silver" Buddhist and Muslim charges is a little suspect. What an image of the state keeping a close grip on communal and religious identities. See the article in the Bangkok Post, which includes this priceless graph:

«Standing beyond the car-bomb barrier and heavily guarded gate of Region 9 police training school, where armed police inspect incoming vehicles, the monument sends a strong message that Buddhists, Muslims and police can live happily together.»

The statue is in a police school outside Yala, in Southern Thailand and was erected in 1966. It certainly has recently been given new coat of paint!!
