Asian Public Art News
Art and similar interventions in public space. Coverage moves outwards from Singapore through Asia to the rest of the world. Like nothing else, the idea of "public art" exposes the contradiction inherent in our ideas of "the public" and of "art".

  Accounting for creativity
Guardian runs the foreword (by Munira Mirza) of a new book on art policy in the UK. At least some of the pieces look specifically at art in public places, and the ease at which such art can become a depressing bureaucratic exercise.

«Josie Appleton shows how, despite the unprecedented growth of public art in our towns and cities, there is a depressing lack of character in these works and even less public interest. Whenever a local authority commissions a piece of public art with the aim of generating 'community spirit', it risks distracting the artist from the tricky job of producing inspiring art.»
