the art may be public but its price isn't!
Pricing of art purchased by public institutions becomes an issue in the UK. See this article in the Times. A journalist's requests for information on the prices of art purchased by public institutions are not answered, even when he requests under the Freedom of Information Act. Commercial confidentiality is the reason given. I'm not sure this makes sense. Surely transparency in the cost of a piece is part of its public character.
